Opinion on, open on impact broadheads

Question:

I am shooting an MQ1 set at 62 pounds. I would like to try some of the open on impact broadheads for hunting deer. Has any one out there used them or is now using them. I would like to know there experience with these heads. I am concerned on getting good penetration with them. I am going to put them on a carbon shaft weighting about 350 grains.  thanks in advance Andre

Response:

Hello Andre:       Just curious why you would want to try mechanicals. Are you having flight probelms? Penetration will not be as good. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I am shooting an MQ1 set at 62 pounds. I would like to try some of the open > on impact broadheads > for hunting deer. Response:

I here they shoot like field points and can be more forgiving under field conditions, and any thing that can may you more forgiving when shooting at an animal is worth checking

First thing to consider upon using expandables is, are you         shooting enough kinetic energy??? Recomended is 60lbs.         I have shot the Spitfire in both 85 and 100 grain with great         success!! On four animals i have shot i had         complete passthourghs and recovery within 40 yards of         each. I will use them again this season. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >I am shooting an MQ1 set at 62 pounds. I would like to try some of the open >on impact broadheads >for hunting deer. I HAVE USED EXPANDABLE BROADHEADS (ROCKETS) FOR THE LAST THREE YEARS. THE FORGIVENESS IS TREMENDOUS. I HIT EXACTLY THE SAME AS WITH MY FIELD POINTS. THE PENETRATION IS TREMENDOUS, NOT TO MENTION THE CUTTING DIAMETER. GIVE ROCKETS A TRY, YOU’LL LOVE THEM! * Sent from AltaVista http://www.altavista.com Where you can also find related Web Pages, Images, Audios, Videos, News, and Shopping.  Smart is Beautiful

Two points that I think no one would dispute regarding mechanical opening broad heads. 1 – They do reduce the drag and plane factor normally observed when switching from field points to broad heads. 2 – penetration is reduced somewhat. Shooting either a PSE fireflite at 70 or an mq32 at 75lbs I’ve used spitfire three blade models for a couple of years now with pretty fair results. HOWEVER there is no question the penetration is NOT as good as standard broad heads. Last year I almost lost a beautiful 8 pointer with the extremely sparse blood trail he left from an otherwise reasonable lung shot. Obviously that can happen with any broad head but it has happened a couple of times with the spitfires. A couple words of advice. Crank up the draw weight a bit; keep the shots under 35 yards; and don’t try spine or other shots that will result in solid bone hits.

Andre, I would suggest the Vortex 125’s.  They have a 2-3/4" cutting width and are very simple and effective.  I have used them for four years and haven’t had to track past 100 yards yet.  I use carbons as well, GoldTip Graphite XT Hunters, and the broadheads complement them nicely. Why add another mechanical variable to a sport that is already becoming too mechanical.  To maintain the high bow speeds that are so popular now you must use a light arrow with small fletch. Light arrow=unstable arrow. Unstable arrow=poor performance with a real broadhead. Thus to get good flight from a poorly conceived rig you must use a mechanical head to reduce windplaning. A good properly mounted 2 or 3 blade broadhead (You sharpen it to the point) on an arrow of reasonable weight (7-10 grains per pound of draw weight) will take any reasonable sized game animal. The extra weight in the arrow will make your bow of whatever description more pleasant to shoot. You will give up some speed, but how fast must an arrow be going when it hits the ground on the other side after passing through an animal? Fred Bear killed the largest Kodiak Bear taken by a bowhunter with a 65 lb Custom Kodiak Takedown, a 2018 shaft with feather fletch and a steel Bear Razorhead and got a complete passthrough. I shoot the same rig except 60 instead of 65. The arrow flies at about 190 fps. Plenty fast enough. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Hello Andre: >       Just curious why you would want to try mechanicals. Are you having flight > probelms?
