Ohio Dove hunting in Jeopardy

Question:

>IMO, its a sad commentary that our society has become so urbanized that >simple wildlife issues we take for granted are unknown to a vast majority >of US citizens. Citizens that can vote!

That, of course, is the problem–the uninformed voter is allowed to decide wildlife management issues (while the state pays expert game managers to do the job). —– Begin Included Message —– Do you know by any chance why they picked the morning dove?  Why not the squirel or racoons or starlings? —– End Included Message —– I can only speculate, but based on what I’ve heard, doves are good ammunition for the antis because of the emotions they evoke.  Afterall, they are the bird of "love and peace" ;)  I heard that the anti’s will purchase ads showing the dove sitting a nest and feeding it’s young and cooing and on and on… then show footage of unclean kills and hurt birds flopping across the field.  Of course this is going to sway the public. The scary thing is that this anti group is organized and has a plan of action. "We" can’t get the long-bow people to talk to the conmpound bow people; the flintlock folks to talk to the in-line folks; trappers and birdhunters don’t get along too well, trapshooters sometimes don’t care about hunting issues… I could go on forever.  "We" (gun collectors, trapshooters, hunters of any type, skeet shooters, sporting clays, pistol, trappers…and on and on) must get organized if we want to educate the undecided (80%) public before they vote on these propositions.  We have to show them that hunting can be a clean, whole-family sport and is a legitimate way to control game populations. The time is now.  It’s too late for trappers in Colorado.  It’s too late for bear hunters in California (that’s the right state isn’t it?).  We have to work together.  Individually, we will get defeated. Recently in our local newspaper, a lady wrote a letter to the editor about how enraged she was that Virginia had a *DOVE* season. She stated how barbaric this was and how there couldn’t be more than a handful of doves in the whole state anyway. And how hunting these handful of beautiful birds was unbelievable. After reading her entire letter it was apparent that she was writing about turtle doves (the white dove with the olive branch in it’s beak). She had no clue about what a morning dove is, what hunting doves is like or how many morning doves are in the state but she felt so firm in her view on the subject (albeit an uninformed view) she wrote a letter to the editor. I regret to this day not writing a letter to the editor responding to her letter. Something to the effect of – Its better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and prove it. If your going to be proactive in a subject, you should at least research and/or know the subject. IMO, its a sad commentary that our society has become so urbanized that simple wildlife issues we take for granted are unknown to a vast majority of US citizens. Citizens that can vote!
