My short list of bows to buy…opinions/advice?

Question:

Look to purchase a new bow, but I have been out of bowhunting for 3 or 4 years.  Seems a lot has changed in 4 years!  I have put together a short list of bows I’ve been considering.  Any opinions/suggestions would be welcome.  I’m trying to stay in the $300-$350 range, so that’s why you don’t see any Mathews or other $600 bows listed.  I also only have one shop in my area that I can find.  And I live in a fairly large city (Jacksonville, Fl) so that suprised me.  I lived in Panama City FL in the past and there were several shops in a MUCH smaller town.  There is one shop north of here about 40 miles or so, I should probably call them to see what lines they carry.  On to the list… Reflex Xtreme – good reviews, but can’t get one local.  Hoyt doesn’t sell mail order, but apparently I can get it from BHW or other mail-order shop. Darton Titan or Yukon – I’m  leaning towards one of these, but again I can’t get one locally.  I like having the advantage of  the CPS single cam but still having a relatively strait string path, nock level, and less string material to stretch. Jennings Buckmaster – Can of worms, I know.  This one I can get local, although $50 higher than BHW.  Felt okay, but I have not fired it yet. May get a chance to later this week. darkhorse is the PSE Nova single cam.  Just over $200, single cam and middle of the range speed.  I can also get this one local.  Again I have not fired it, but I may have the shop set one up for me just to compare. That’s pretty much the list.  I guess I should state what I want to use these for.  WT deer, local "fun" shoots, 3d, etc.  My previous bows were a cheap Bear "starter" set, then I upgraded to a Hoyt SuperSlam(?), niether of which I own anymore.  I’m looking for at least 70lb pull on a 28 draw (or very close to 70), probably flinging 2413’s or 2312’s if they are not too light, hopefully around 240-260 fps.  Also need a LH model, just to make it more difficult to find the right bow :-) .  If anyone has any suggestions on these bows, as well as ordering bows from mail order in general, I would appreciate the info. — Regards, Mark J Mathis

I’d go with the Reflex Xtreme. A shootable speedster at a great price and it’s a handsome bow as well. You can get a closer look at it in the edersbow on-line catalog: www.edersbow.com/catalog  In the magazine section of edersbow, www.edersbow.com , you’ll find an article on single cams by Bill Winke that is a refreshing and non-partisan look at some of today’s best. You may also want ot look at some martin bows. I’ve shot most of their bows and have never had a complaint. david – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Look to purchase a new bow, but I have been out of bowhunting for 3 or >4 years.  Seems a lot has changed in 4 years!  I have put together a >short list of bows I’ve been considering.  Any opinions/suggestions >would be welcome.  I’m trying to stay in the $300-$350 range, so >that’s why you don’t see any Mathews or other $600 bows listed.  I >also only have one shop in my area that I can find.  And I live in a >fairly large city (Jacksonville, Fl) so that suprised me.  I lived in >Panama City FL in the past and there were several shops in a MUCH >smaller town.  There is one shop north of here about 40 miles or so, I >should probably call them to see what lines they carry.  On to the >list… >Reflex Xtreme – good reviews, but can’t get one local.  Hoyt doesn’t >sell mail order, but apparently I can get it from BHW or other >mail-order shop. >Darton Titan or Yukon – I’m  leaning towards one of these, but again I >can’t get one locally.  I like having the advantage of  the CPS single >cam but still having a relatively strait string path, nock level, and >less string material to stretch. >Jennings Buckmaster – Can of worms, I know.  This one I can get local, >although $50 higher than BHW.  Felt okay, but I have not fired it yet. >May get a chance to later this week. >darkhorse is the PSE Nova single cam.  Just over $200, single cam and >middle of the range speed.  I can also get this one local.  Again I >have not fired it, but I may have the shop set one up for me just to >compare. >That’s pretty much the list.  I guess I should state what I want to >use these for.  WT deer, local "fun" shoots, 3d, etc.  My previous >bows were a cheap Bear "starter" set, then I upgraded to a Hoyt >SuperSlam(?), niether of which I own anymore.  I’m looking for at >least 70lb pull on a 28 draw (or very close to 70), probably flinging >2413’s or 2312’s if they are not too light, hopefully around 240-260 >fps.  Also need a LH model, just to make it more difficult to find the >right bow :-) .  If anyone has any suggestions on these bows, as well >as ordering bows from mail order in general, I would appreciate the >info. >— >Regards, >Mark J Mathis

can’t comment on the reflex, but i shoot a pse beast for hunting.  28 3/4 draw 65pds with 27in 2413 with 100gr points and through the crony at 245fps. i did use teflon tape on the cable guard and a shorter center serving about 4 1/2 inch. a note on all of the single cams i have shot.  setup your draw length very carefully.  if you plus to hard into the wall they all seem to send shots high to the left. hope this helps. reed – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Look to purchase a new bow, but I have been out of bowhunting for 3 or >4 years.
