Mtn lion self defense
Question:
Here in california I was told that a lion must attack you before you can shoot it. If the lion is 10 feet from you and you shoot it because it is hissing you still can not shoot it. This sounds really strange. I would think at this point, the cat is showing his intentions and why wait to get clawed? Anybody know the facts? They must believe in fair fights in California. Once it attacks you, I’d say you have a 50/50 chance of winning with a good gun and a cool head! Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Those are essentially the facts. Exceptions are lions that attack domestic stock or pets. F & G will tell you that NOT EVEN THEN can you kill them, but check with your county AG agent or Animal Control and you will learn the truth. Or there is the 3 S’s !! (Shoot, Shovel, and Shut-up!) Damn the animal rights lunacy. Giving a cougar a 50/50 chance of winning is crazy. Believe the liberal nonsense and you end up dead. You are far more important than the cougar; if in doubt, shoot away. It’s your word against the cougars… Phil Bronson Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

My suggestion is to call your congressman/woman and try to get legislation passed to reinact the right to hunt Mountain Lion in the state of California ! If a lion doesn’t feel any threat from man it is only natural that it will put man in its food chain, and man is the easiest prey it comes to know ! I am suprised that there is not more attacks than there is . Mike Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Phil, The problem is that it must attack you first. I heard last yr a Turkey hunter was attack and he shot the cat. The warden sighted the guy but the charges were droped when they found part of the hunters flesh under the cats nails. So , I guess you have let it maul you first and take the risk of getting killed before you can shoot. I have to agree on that one, Any person is more valuable than any animal. The laws around here, San Diego, says that you can’t carry a weapon in the state parks. The parks are loaded with lions. I answer to a higher law that says that i must defend my family against harm. I doubt that mister ranger wants to follow us around when we go for a hike so i take my own precautions. shoot, shovel, shut up… joe JAH "Will Hunt for food" Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Ok. I understand how the animal rights lunacy works, but my point is that a human life is far, far more important than the life of the cougar. The game warden may cite and fine you, but at least you are alive and you can appeal the citation. Waiting for a cougar to get close enough to maul you is not good for life and good health. Sometimes you have to do the right thing and perhaps take the unjust and unfair consequences. Well, I don’t think it’s a good idea to wait that long. The fact that it’s hanging around and not doing its best to get the hell out of there indicates it presents a probable danger to humans. If not to you, then perhaps to a smaller, more helpless appearing person. Phil has it right. I would be very tempted to adopt what we call up here the Triple S system – Shoot, Shovel and Shut-up. It’s a shame that a fine trophy like a cougar has to be wasted, but if a foolish law and a tight situation leave you no choice, protect yourself (and others) first. If your conscience dictates you must turn yourself in, so be it. K. "Grizzly bear, good bear, Mike. You shoot him, he come toward you!
