I will be moving to the Bitteroot Valley area of western Montana later this year. I’m relocating from North Carolina. Hoping to do some big-game hunting (elk, whitetail, and maybe black bear). My property is only about 10 acres (crawling with game, BTW), but it is backed up to state land, Bitteroot National Forest, and the Selway-Bitteroot Wilderness (further west). Are any of these areas restricted to hunting? Any specials rules I need to follow for hunting these lands? Also wondering about the process of obtaining licenses, etc., for residents. Where I am now, you buy a $10 or $15 general hunter’s license each year, and then purchase your big game tags (another $10 – $15), and you’re all set.
