Putting grease on before getting the smell off it like locking it in so it will never get out. It is a fungus and you need to kill it. I suggest you have to wash it off and start over. You may want to see a shoe repair man to recommend soaps which are safe and strong enough. White vinagar was pretrty good for me to get the smell out but it may have been luck. > My boots were stored in a damp part of my basement and as a result, had > mildew on them. Some brands use Thymol as one of the key ingredients, so look for that on the label. Do not bother with Lysol disinfectant, it won’t work (in my experience). And don’t bother with alcohol or other cleansers, they won’t work either. And you sure can’t use bleach on your boots, which would work but will destroy your boots. Since thymol kills mold and mildew, libraries and other archivists use (or used to use) thymol crystals to kill the mildew forming on paper. After "treatment" leave your boots in a very sunny spot for a few days to finish killing the residual mildew. No, I’m not kidding. Use Simple Green to clean both the grease off and the mildew out. Use lots of it then rinse them thoroughly. Then put baking soda in the boots like foot powder when they are dry and were them with it in. It is a good scent absorber even when your boots aren’t mildewed. Baking Soda and lots of it. First emmerse the boots in it for a few days, inside and out! Then scrub them down with saddle soap and baking soda. Then store in baking soda until hunting. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/
