I don’t want to make a claim I’m not sure of, but I can speak from experience on the issue to some degree. Several years ago we had a local boy who had an incurable form of cancer and was granted a "rare" wish. He wanted nothing for himself, but wanted a senior class trip. He attended a very small, rural school that only had about eight seniors. The trip was planned and ready. They had everything from air fare to condos on the beach complete with jet skis, fishing trips, etc. awaiting them. All donated by the businesses involved. The class graduated and a day later the boy died. He had made it very clear that if he didn’t make it, he wanted his classmates to take the trip. But without the "wishing child" able to make the trip, the organization was risking its tax-exempt status. In the end, the organization ended up creating a scholarship for a graduate of his school to a local university in his name and made a large donation. It was a sad ending, but the best the organization could come up with without risking their tax-exampt status. The point here is that the local chapter in Albuquerque had to go to the national headquarters on this and the national office was very supportive, but had rules they had to live by. I would bet, any hedging on the national level was only a concern for an organization that does more good in a day than any of the AR groups do in a lifetime. They just love kids and want to offer them what they can. Sorry for the lengthy, rather off-topic post. But Make A Wish is a great organization and they deserve the good publicity. Darren PS. I covered the issue for the local paper and it was heart-wrenching throughout the ordeal, but the Make A Wish organization was top notch, professional and compassionate from start to finish. | 505-356-2697 America Online – DW Marcy |

I called the national chapter and they notified the local chapter. Got a nice e-mail response from a local board member who asked not to be named. He doesn’t want to put up with the BS from the ARs… Maybe we should make a list of the Hollywierd crowd that gritches about this. One comic(?) canceled an appearance at an MaW fund raiser in protest. The Make-a-Wish Foundation has posted a statement on its homepage concerning the youngster’s wish. It states that although Make-a-Wish respects the rights of others to express their own values and opinions, the wishes of the boy have been granted. I don’t think that this is a statement of support for hunting per se; it is, however, a clear message to Cleveland Armory and his group that, although they have every right to rant, rave, scream and act like general jackasses, it doesn’t necessarilly mean that everyone is going to cave in to their childish ravings. Other groups have done so under pressure that has been put forth by these AR groups; Make-a-Wish didn’t. The child still got his wish. For this, Make-a-Wish gets my support. If anyone is interested in getting addresses of local chapters, check out Make-a-Wish at: http://www.wish.org/ Rich brings up a very good point here that should be addressed, perhaps. Why was the California chapter so opposed to granting the child’s wish when the national organization and other local chapters supported it? What if the boy had been from California? Would the wish have still been granted? Would we have even heard about the wish to be given the chance to voice our views and support for the boy? These questions are rhetorical, of course. I think we all have a pretty good idea as to the answers. It concerns me that there are obviously a few bad apples even in selfless organizations like this that are cloaking their own political agendas under the guise of an organization dedicated to such pure acts of altruism as Make-a-Wish. This is why I will be sending my donation to the Minnesota chapter, and voicing my support to the national org. Hopefully, Make-a-Wish will see this happening in great volume, and will conclude that some chapters need to have the mission statement clarified to them. I see that I have taken up entirely too much room, here. I’ll get off the soapbox now. Just my two cents. Good hunting, all — // ~ ~ / (~ 0 0 ~) "Never wrestle with a pig. The flap over the Minnesota kid whose dying wish is a Kodiak bear hunt has made big news recently. Among other developments, some of the Hollywierd glitterati–paragons of personal integrity that they are–have reneged on some fundraising activities in retaliation for Make A Wish Foundation standing by its commitment to send the boy on his hunt. At a recent meeting of various sportsmen’s groups, this subject came up. I asked how many of those attending would be willing to meet with me at 4:00 PM this Thursday, 16 May, at the Make A Wish Minnesota headquarters. I asked each person to bring an empty box of centerfire ammo with a price tag on it and a donation for at least that amount for Make A Wish. I am inviting any hunter, sportsman or sportswoman, or anyone else who wants to see Make a Wish succeed in their noble and selfless work on behalf of terminally-ill children to join with us. The Make A Wish Minnesota headquarters are at: Make A Wish Minnesota 5201 East River Road, Minneapolis, MN 55421 If you cannot attend, please feel free to mail a donation and mention the "box of ammo" campaign. This is a nonpartisan activity and no one group of the several involved is trying to take credit, although Joe Olson of the Gun Owner’s Civil Rights Alliance is planning to issue press releases. Moreover, it is important that participants not come with an agenda other than helping the children. There was an article in this morning’s paper on Erik, the young man from Minnesota that has a terminal brain tumor & got to go on a Kodiak bear hunt as his final wish. He is up there now, thanks to the Safari Club & lots of other hunters. A German hunter gave up his permit so Erik could go.Of course the Humane Society of the United States, Fund fo the Animals, & a Los Angeles based AR group called ARK Trust is squalling to high Heaven. The honcho at HSUS said the young man should have been allowed to go film the bear, not hunt it. ARK said they would fix it so the Erik could meet Pierce Brosnan (AR?) on the new James Bond set. Funds for the Animals tried to stop it by issueing "alerts" on the internet & in their monthly magazine "Bunny Huggers Gazette". Gretchen Wyler of ARK said that Make-A-Wish will "rue the day they ever let Safari Club be a partner." They also said "that the foundation will never be able to sustain the damage this will do to their image, ESPECIALLY in the Hollywood community". Cheers & good wishs to Make-A-Wish & the Safari Club for standing up to the ARs & granting this young man’s wish. AND NOW A WORD FROM MY WIFE, Nobody could love animals anymore than I do and living with an avid hunter for 30 years has not always been easy. But I happen to love children more than animals. This could very well be the last big thrill this young man will ever have. Not to mention the fact that his father, although he won’t be hunting, will never forget this either. Although the young man may not get his bear, how could anyone in their right mind deny him the chance. I certainly wouldn’t want it on my conscience that I put an animal before a dying child. Good Luck Erik. Woody and Darlene Williams
