Check with a radio dealer about "itinerant" radio frequencies in the VHF and UHF bands. Some "itinerant" radios such as the Motorola Spirit can transmit up to 5 watts. Some of the "itinerant" frequencies can transmit up to 50 watts from a base station. Also, if you hunt from the same stand all the time, you can put an external antenna up the tree and get great range. One of the previous posters were incorrect, VHF has greater range, UHF has greater penetration. The rule of thumb is VHF is 1 mile per watt over flat ground, UHF is 2/3 mile per watt over flat ground. FYI I use a Kenwood TK-250 for hunting on 154.600 MHz (green dot) and get great results. This radio is on the high side, but I use it for my job as a paramedic. Robert from Up North, Wisconsin Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

jj, Motorola just came out with "Talkabout radios" in the family radios service frequencie that *might* fill your needs. The best solution would be to buy a book on getting your "Technician" amateur radio license. I did this a couple of years ago and am glad I did. I studied for about a month for a couple hours a week, took the test and am a licensed ham radio operator. You can buy handheld ham radios that will cover about 6 bands on receive, and 2 or 3 on xmit, but they’re a little more than $150. If this is too much trouble to go through, check out the little Motorolas that I recommended. -Jeremy > need info on buying hand held radios for hunting, looking in the 300 to 500 > dollar canadian thats about 150 US :) > would like to be able to monitor logging truck freq. and have a range of 3 > to 5 miles > could you suggest a few brands and models that you would use. > should i use marine /UHF/VHF any suggestions would be a great help thank > you jason > Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: > http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Anyone have any experience with the FRS radios? They are small and moderately priced but I just wonder how well they would work in the woods. They claim a range of up to 2 mi. paul – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > It’s going to be hard finding a handheld that will cover that range; Normal > range is around 1/2 to 1 mile. > need info on buying hand held radios for hunting, looking in the 300 to 500 > dollar canadian thats about 150 US :) > would like to be able to monitor logging truck freq. and have a range of 3 > to 5 miles > could you suggest a few brands and models that you would use. > should i use marine /UHF/VHF any suggestions would be a great help thank > you jason > Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: > http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/ > Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: > http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Just my 2 cents on this subject. My hunting buddy convinced me to purchase a couple of 40 channel hand held cb’s for hunting. They work very poor, and can only be used for extremely short distances. I have thought about buying the extended antennae but feel that I have already wasted enough money on these things. They are now being used as the most expensive walkie-talkies my 9 year old and his friends have ever used If anyone has any suggestions on how to get better use, please feel free to respond here in the hunting newsgroup, or e-mail me privately. Make sure that you look at rules for the radio you pick. Marine is restricted in use. UHF will go farther, but will be affected by obstructions (trees, buildings, etc.). VHF will do better, but not go quite as far. Also look at the power output. Most handheld radios put out 5 watts of power at full charge. For VHF, that’s about 1 to 2 1/2 miles over open range. UHF, expect 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 miles, again over open terrain. Logging trucks are going to be difficult to monitor, as some are on the business band (both VHF and UHF) and some are on HF (around 30 to 45 MHz). Motorola makes a good radio, as do Midland and ADI. Maxtor, Icom, and Yaesu are also good, but more expensive. Hope this helps some, feel free to let me know if there’s anything else I can do to help. Matt

Probably your best bet is the "new" FRS frequencies. It’s going to be hard finding a handheld that will cover that range; Normal range is around 1/2 to 1 mile.

My retriever club just bought 5 Motorola Distance DPS radios for around $200 a piece. They have a stated range of 2-5 miles (although 2.5 is about what you can expect under "normal" circumstances). I do not think they can monitor truck frequencies. — + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + Chris Barnes AOL IM: cnbarnes Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/
