Bear bites hunter

Question:

I heard on the radio this morning about an incident in SW Washington state.  A hunter shot a black bear at close range.  The bear attacked the hunter badly mauling his leg.  To make matters worse, the hunter, in an attempt to fend off the angry bear, shot himself in the foot (not funny).  The hunter had to be evacuated via stretcher, the bear died of his wounds at the scene. If anyone has any further details about caliber of weapon used, shot placement, etc. Please post em.  Bears are very tough, pugnatious animals and are not to be taken lightly.  They are quite common in my neighborhood here in Western Washington, ergo my interest in close encounters of the unpleasant kind. – CW Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/ To leave the Hunting listserv list, send a message with SIGNOFF HUNTING

I saw just the inro news clip where the hunter was in the middle of recounting his attack.  Sounds like he shot it, the bear attacked and was chewing on his lower legs.  His buddy gave him another firearm which he used to continue shooting into the bear at contact range.  Seems like he said it took ten shots! From the way he held his hands it appeared at least his buddies firearm was a handgun.  Never heard the actuall firearms or calibers mentioned. Myself and a buddy were at a local dump last year and witnessed a couple of young people lobbing sizeable rocks/boulders at black bears feasting in the dump. We felt one of two things……. 2. They were AWFUL brave!!!! We think ref #1 is the answer. Please let everyone know, BEARS ARE NOT TO BE TOYED WITH, THEY MAY LOOK CUTE AND CUDDLEY…..BUT THAT’S WHERE IT ALL STOPS, THEY ARE THE MOST DESTRUCTIVE FORCES IN THE BOREAL FOREST!!! Perhaps the greatest enemy bears have is Winnie the Pooh thanks to Disney. Winne they are not, never will be and never will be!!! OH, AND YES, THE DUMP BEARS AFOREMENTIONED IGNORED THEIR TORMENTORS TOTALLY!!!! LUCKY THEM!!! Jim F.
