30-06 vs 25-06 for deer
Question:
You’ve answered your own question. Use the 100gr. Barnes or a Trophy Bonded bullet and your 25-06 will do fine, although a 165gr. 30-06 is really no slouch at long range either. If I were just going to hunt deer, I’d use a 130 gr. bullet in my .270. I’ve shot about 25 Whitetail and Mule Deer as well as about 15 Antelope with my 25-06 using 90 and 100 grain bullets. I have had to trail ONE Big Mulie Buck, and that was just over a hill, about 100 yards. I love my 25! Jon > You’ve answered your own question. Use the 100gr. Thank you for your post. I believe that I shall start looking in pawn shops, gun shops, gun shows etc to find something decent in a Ruger, Remington, etc. How does the 25-06 recoil? Is there any noticable difference between that and a 30-06? Have you had any trouble finding ammo? Recoil will be midway between a .243 and a .270 or ‘06. Ammo is pretty durned easy to find … Most gun clubs I’ve been associated with have a monthly flier where members can advertise what they’re trying to sell. Might be a good place to look. Heck, they might even let you post a "wanted". The .25-06 with 120 grain bullets kicks much less than a .30-06 with 150 grain bullets. Ammo selection has gotten a lot wider in the past two years. I’ve used Remington 120gr Core-Lokt factory ammo with satisfactory results. There’s factory loads using Nosler Partitions, Trophy Bonded Bear Claws, Hornady Interlocks, Nosler Ballistic Tips, and Speer Grand Slams. I’ve seen Remington ammo in WalMart. The cartridge seems to be gaining in popularity. I have less people say, "Don’t you mean THIRTY-06!?" That’s why I reload. I have used the 25-’06 for deer, using the 100 grain BARNES X-BULLET and cannot believe the consistent performance. I use the 100 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip for target and gphers (even though I didn’t whack a gopher trhis year – DARN !!!) and it’s an amazingly acurate round in my Ruger 77V bull barrel, that was floated and bedded by my buddy. Over my Oehler 35P I find the Barnes-X produces about 20-30 fps more than the Nosler, but they’re both superbly accurate (the round was "built" around the Nosler). That slight increase in velocity is noticible in ALL the calibres where I have tried the Barnes, so I guess the longer bearing surface DOES increase pressures a bit. Regardless, I find the Ballistic Tip driven at 3300 or so makes a HELL of a mess on the big Mule Deer of central BC, but while the X DESTROYS the lungs and produces a nice exit hole, it just doesn’t seem to cause as much MEAT damage as the Ballistic Tip. The Nosler Partition 120 was my FAVORITE bullet before the 100 X came along, and it’s a FINE deer round. My gun just never was able to find a 120 gr bullet that it liked; for that matter, I didn’t have much success with the 87’s and 90’s I tried, either !!! There’s my two cent’s worth, anyway…….
